How the mind and the nervous system, ('Neuro')are influenced by language,('Linguistic'). The latter term refers to communication in the widest sense and can be internal i.e. your self-talk and external, to and by others, also both verbal  and non-verbal through our senses, i.e. sight, hearing, touch and feelings, smell and taste.

The resulting behaviour and sometimes thinking are determined after all information is organised. This is usually carried out in a prescribed and predictable way which the mind will continually use to protect you. ('Programming')

'The thought manifests as the word, the word manifests as a deed, the deed develops into habit, and the habit hardens into character. So watch the thought and its way with care. And let it spring from love, born out of concern for all beings'

So if you believe you can't do something the mind will do its best to prove you right. Your own senses and resources can be used to insure that inhibiting beliefs can be changed and allow you to be more empowered.

NLP has its origins in the early 1970's and is derived from work done by Richard Bandler and John Grinder at the University of California. The basic principles were derived from modelling the practices of  world renowned therapists Fritz Perls (Gesthalt Therapy), Virginia Satir (Family Therapy) and Milton Erickson (Hypnotherapy).

It also has solid theoretical underpinning from anthropology, neurology, psychology, linguistics (transformational grammar) through contributions from the likes of Noam Chomski, Gregory Bateson, George A Miller all internationally recognised in their fields, and many others.

Watch 'The Power of Words' - The Red Balloon: http//

The video was produced to demonstrate the power of language in advertising and marketing.

It is also a practical example of how quickly the use of words can change peoples perceptions and it emphasises the importance of being aware your own 'self talk' in influencing your behaviour.

'It is not the actual words themselves that create consciousness or heal the body or change conditions. They're just the forms we use to express feelings and thoughts. It is the awakened realisations behind them that have the real power, and words with spiritual power go forth and create'

Andrea Gardner, 'Change Your Words, Change Your World'
